The body follows what the mind conceives. The condition of the mind often affects how the body performs, which explains why people who are stressed often suffer from accelerated aging and health problems. There are techniques that can help avoid or at least minimize stress. Follow these top 10 ways to relax and give your mind and body a good break.

1. Learn to breathe.

Breathing comes unconsciously, which sometimes encourages us to take it for granted. Several times a day, when you feel stress coming on or you feel tired and unenthusiastic, do a few deep breathing exercises. Here’s how:

Sit or stand with your spine straight and stretched slightly. Then slowly take a breath at a slow count of 3 and exhale just as slowly. Allow your lungs to expand as you take in the air and empty it as you breathe out. If it helps to close your eyes, then do so. Fresh oxygen helps enliven your blood and the slow breathing encourages you to sit or stand still for a moment.

2. Stretch.

Another way to relax is slow stretching. Whether you’re standing or seated, make sure to keep your spine straight and allow your arms to dangle loosely at your side. Feet should be flat on the floor and relaxed.

Slowly raise your arms high, as if you’re reaching for the ceiling and slowly raise yourself on the ball of your feet. Follow the movement of your hands with your eyes so that your head can tilt back. Hold this position for a count of 10 and then slowly bring down your arms.

3. Increase your physical activities.

Or at least get yourself one if you haven’t got any up until now. Contrary to what other people think, exercising actually helps you relax afterwards. It cleanses your body of toxins by inducing sweat, increases your blood flow and the flow of oxygen to the brain and it works up your muscles.

Start slowly and gradually build up until you are able to maintain a regular schedule.

4. Watch your diet.

What you eat affects your mood. Another great way to relax is to maintain a diet that is rich in nutrients, such as antioxidants, folate and omega-3 fatty acids. Eat more fruits and vegetables and when you’re thirsty, grab a bottle of water and keep away from sodas and flavored drinks.

5. Get enough sound sleep.

Sleep is about quality and not just quantity but in times of stress, it’s best to get as much sleep as you can. About 6 to 8 hours should get you the rest you need.

Getting enough sleep is an excellent way to relax. It allows your body to regroup and recover and it eases your mind of other concerns.

6. Use music.

If music works for you, use it. Stick to soft tunes and don’t whip out that Metallica CD just yet. Rock music tends to use heavy bass lines, hard percussions and strong lyrics. If you want to relax, turn to soft and easy listening and save those faster tunes for some other time.

7. Turn away from the modern trappings of your life.

Often, the most relaxing things are also the ones that are the most basic. Once a week at least or more often, turn off the TV. Unplug it and keep the remote outside of your reach. Turn off the computer as well.

These two are common sources of distractions. Due to the rapidly changing images and the overflow of information, they can sometimes overload the mind and hinder relaxation. Keep things simple and don’t sweat the small, insignificant stuff.

8. Have time to yourself.

A good way to relax is to set aside time for some peace and quiet. What better way to do this than to schedule short vacations for yourself? You don’t have to pack your bags or even leave the house - simply close the door, find a nice, quiet place to sit and enjoy your own company.

9. Try yoga or meditation.

Yoga and meditation helps you attain a good body and mind connection. As a result, you’re more likely to feel relaxed and refreshed. Try simple yoga steps or learn to meditate a few minutes each day. Do these regularly and you’ll find that it will get easier to relax and manage stress later on.

10. Laugh.

Find your sense of humor again. Be with family and friends you can be yourself with. Laughter is one of the best ways to relax and it doesn’t have to cost a thing. It also helps you build connections with people in your life who really matter.

There is an old saying that goes “Music doth soothe the savage beast”, or something to that effect. It turns out there is more truth to that adage than you might expect. Scientist, through extensive studies into brain wave management, have shown that certain frequencies can be combined to create stress relief music. Utilizing this technology, digital music makers have created CDs and MP3 libraries of music designed to provide health benefits including stress relief, improved sleep habits, and mental focus.

The mechanism behind the design of these digital stress relievers is the science of binaural beats.

What are binaural beats?

Experiments in audio stimulation and reaction have determined that when two different sounds of similar frequencies are sent one to each ear, the brain initiates a process called entrainment.

Entrainment is a phenomenon that occurs when the brain automatically adjusts itself to the two different frequencies being piped in, and essentially filters out the difference between the two frequencies to create a new differential frequency or “beat”.

Practically speaking, if you play a tone of 250 cycles per second frequency in one ear and a tone of a 265 cycles per second frequency in the other, each tone will be processed by both the left and right hemispheres of the brain. The brain reacts over time by creating a “phantom” frequency in an attempt to “smooth” out the difference between the 2 tones. This frequency (15 cycles per second in this example) is a binaural beat and the brain will adjust its wave output to match this frequency.

Brain wave ranges can dictate focus, mood, and level of relaxation.

Brain waves are nothing more than electromagnetic activity. This activity can be measured, as any other type of current, in increments of cycles per second. Extensive experimentation has established ranges scientists commonly use to define particular states of mind. When our brain waves, or electrical impulses, are being generated in these ranges, particular behaviors can be observed.

The wave range our brain exhibits in our normal day-to-day activities is called Beta. The Beta range occurs in the 15 cycles per second and up range. There is little deliberate organization in the mind in this state, and it is typically just running from one thought to the next. In daily life, this is the brain wave range that supports our multi-tasking oriented lifestyle.

The next level down is Alpha. Alpha waves are associated with a state of mind generally referred to as alert relaxation. The Alpha range is 8-14 cycles per second. This state is commonly exhibited in the minutes just before we wake or just before we fall asleep. It is also the pattern our brain exhibits when we are daydreaming or “dozing off”.

As we move down the brain wave range the next classification is the Theta range. Theta, occurring at the 4-7 cycles per second range, is the brain wave level associated with dream activity, deep meditation, and REM sleep.

The bottom of the known spectrum is the Delta range, which occurs at brain wave rates less than 4 cycles per second. It is usually associated with deep, dreamless sleep and body healing and rejuvenation.

Through the use of designed sound combinations, selected binaural beats can be generated in our brains, placing us in a specific mental state. In addition to lowering ar raising brain wave frequency to relax or excite a listener, there are other more controversial, alleged uses for binaural beats. For example, it has been postulated that by using specific frequencies, an individual can stimulate certain glands to produce desired hormones. As an example, experiments have demonstrated that endorphins, commonly produced in the “runner’s high” state of mind, can be generated by using specific combinations of binaural beats.

In other experimental uses, there are studies that show that learning time and sleep requirements can be reduced by introducing adults to a program of theta wave inducing music. Theta waves are thought to improve learning because children, who usually learn new concepts faster than adults, exhibit stronger theta wave patterns and typically maintain the healthy theta wave state for longer periods than their elders.

Binaural beats are now routinely used by therapists to help people reduce stress and improve mental clarity and focus. Progressive programs are also utilizing binaural beats to assist cancer patients deal with the effects of chemotherapy and other treatments. Binaural beats can also be used for meditation and self-hypnosis and to potentially alter selected behavioral patterns, including smoking and over-eating.

As the science around binaural beats advances, new uses are being discovered and more people are developing binaural beat recordings to achieve specific results. The potential benefits of the healing and rejuvenating powers of binaural beats include weight loss programming, attention deficit disorder therapies, and stress management applications. The benefits are just being tapped and the progress is very encouraging for the future of emotional and physical therapy.

Don’t be surprised if you hear more and more about the medical profession embracing therapies involving the use of stress relief music and other binaural beat relaxation applications. Many people are taking advantage of these advances through the use of custom audio programs designed to induce a desired state of mind, to train the brain to better handle stress and anxiety, or to help the body heal and re-energize itself.

This increases your metabolism and helps your body to burn fat. This process continues while you sleep which makes your body tired. With regular cardio exercise you basically kill two birds with one stone. You trim fat while putting yourself in the best position to feel tired and sleep well at night.

Use Smart Supplements There are lots of supplements out there that claim to help you achieve restful sleep. Be wise and choose a natural supplement like Whey Protein. This all-natural byproduct of dairy is 90% protein and helps your body develop lean muscle even while you sleep. This is a gluten free supplement that is used by professional athletes and anyone who wants to burn fat and build lean muscle. Whey Protein is a great way to effectively increase your metabolism as you exercise regularly before bedtime.

By following these tips you should be looking and feeling better in no time and sleeping soundly through the night.

I have been reading a lot about sounds and the stress-relieving properties of sound therapies. It “sounds: like we are finally getting down to our roots and finding natural ways to heal that were used by our Ancestors.

Since there was not medicine available like we have today, they used drumbeats, chimes and signing bowls to experience a higher state of consciousness. As you know from reading Directed Dreaming, once you enter into the higher conscious (or subconscious) you are able to find out things that can help you in everyday life (such as finding answers to important questions, solving money problems, etc.)

There have been clinical trials performed that suggest that sound may boost the immune system, trigger our body’s production of natural painkillers, and relieve stress. Music therapy can be done by anyone, even if you don’t have a musical ability; it consists of playing a slow even rhythm (on a drum), or using cymbals, bells or gongs.

If playing a gong or pounding on drums is just not your style, and you think it might make you feel (or look) a little silly, there are fairly normal, natural, things you can get to help you relax using sound or light, like water fountains, stress free alarm clocks and aromatherapy that includes soft music.

There is also a really cool computer game that uses biofeedback, and as you play you go into a deep, relaxed state that empowers you to create excellent health and wellness, as well as relieve stress.

Try these things out for yourself, a little music never hurt anyone!

Music therapy just doesn’t get the recognition that it deserves. Many people think it is nothing more than just a crock. Yet it can be a very effective form of therapy for people of all ages. Think about the music you listen to and you will find you give yourself a type of therapy with it. Do you listen to certain music when you are mad or sad to help you feel better? Do you have a favorite CD you pop in after work on the ride home to reduce stress from a hard a day at the office?

Think about the types of music you hear when you go to certain locations. What do you hear at the doctor and dentist office? Likely it is soft flowing music that could put you to sleep if you relax too long in the waiting room. There is a reason for such music to be offered there though. It is to help you relax as they know many individuals become quite anxious before their appointments.

What type of music do you hear in clubs and casinos? It is very upbeat and full of energy. Why? Because they want you to continue hanging out and spending your money there. They know if you are happy and having a good time you won’t want to go home early. They also know it can mean you will come back again in the future as you will associate it all with a good time even if you don’t necessarily connect it back to the music.

Children are exposed to music at a very early age in most instances. They too will find there are certain types of it that help them to relax, to go to sleep, and to get through those awful chores parents place upon them! It is important to let your children explore their own connection to music. Don’t limit them to your believes and experiences relating to it. They need to have their own link to it so that they can get the most from it throughout their lives.

Music therapy is all around us and it is very powerful. It is used by people of all ages to help them cope with what life tosses their way. It is an outlet for emotions too regardless of what they may be. Therefore it only makes sense that professionals are able to use music as well. It can help children to open up, adults to identify with certain situations, and for united efforts to occur.

Many individuals with physical or mental disabilities do respond very well to music therapy. Those that are attempting to recover from some type of traumatic experience also do well when it is introduced. It is as if this is a universal language that everyone shares regardless of their abilities or limitations.

As with any other type of therapy though it can take time for the results to be seen. That can mean funding for such services gets limited by insurance companies. Still, many grants have been awarded for music therapy to be introduced to those that could benefit from it. As a result there is more information about the improvements that have been made. It is hopeful that this information will speak volumes about the power that music therapy has to offer.

Doesn’t everyone enjoy a great body bath?  It’s relaxing, enjoyable, and even good for you.  You may even feel more beautiful after a bath!  It’s kind of like a massage at a spa - only quicker and less expensive.

First, and not immediately before your bath, make sure your bath is clean and free of clutter.  You don’t want to think about dirt and mess when you are trying to relax!  Create an environment that reminds your of beauty, tranquility, and calm.

Make sure to collect all the supplies you will need for before, during, and after your body bath.  Get your towels, candles, essential oils, music, soap, and sleeping clothes together in the bathroom.  Nothing spoils a relaxing bath like having to run around during or after it to get something you’ve forgotten.

Prepare your bath water to be 100 degrees Fahrenheit / 38 degrees Celsius.  Some studies have shown that this temperature relaxes your muscles and stimulates calming chemicals in your brain.

Essential Oils

For additional relaxation effects, consider adding natural essential oils such as:

- Lavender – Used by many people across many generations, lavender is valued for both it fragrance and beauty.  It is generally considered a great essential oil for a body bath, from age 2 to 102!

- Bergamot – With a fresh smell, bergamot creates a relaxed and happy feeling.  It has a citrus smell with spicy and floral qualities.  Bergamot has been used to treat depression, stress, tension, fear, and skin infections.

- Cedarwood – Well known for its known for its tranquilizing and soothing effects, Cedarwood boasts a rich woody spicy aroma.   It is terrific for providing a sense of well being and relaxation.

- Patchouli - Traditionally used in the East for both medicinal and aromatic purposes, Patchouli originated from Malaysia is used frequently in perfume and cosmetic applications.  Patchouli is a ‘love it or hate it’ type of oil, so smell it in the store or borrow a bottle from a friend before investing in a bottle for yourself.

Normally a total of 8-10 drops of the oils makes for a pleasing experience.

There are many sources of essential oils, including health stores and the internet.  If you absolutely can’t get essential oil, consider using a bubble bath – they are widely available in grocery and other general stores.  Watch out for dangerous chemicals and fake perfume smells.  Look for a product that is as natural as possible - it will you will feel more beautiful, attractive, and healthy.

Other Tips for Your Bath

Turn the lights down or off and light a candle to provide a soft glow to help you relax.  Enjoy, but don’t stay in for more than 30 minutes - you could fall asleep.  After enjoying your body bath, put on your night clothes and slip into bed for a relaxing night’s sleep.

While soaking, make sure you breathe deeply.  Breathe slowing in your nose, filling your chest with air.  Breathe out through your mouth.  As a test to see if you are breathing deeply and properly, put one hand on your chest and the other hand on your stomach – your chest should not move.  Remeber to relax.

Consider adding some extras to make your body bath especially special:

- Add a pillow: Put a kitchen trash bag over it to keep it dry and place it inside a normal pillowcase

- Play some soft music: Select your favorite relaxing music and set it up to really set the mood

- Treat yourself to a face mask

- Select a special, all-natural soap

- Put on some natural lotion with natural perfume smells and essential oils

Above all, enjoy the relaxation and health benefits of the bath for your body!

There are many different ways to release stress and promote health. For some people, exercise is the best way to burn off some steam and generate feel-good endorphins. For others, a day at the spa under the hands of a masseuse is the best ways to loosen tense muscles. And for people with extremely high levels of anxiety, a doctor might even prescribe medication to help them deal with the stress.

Although effective, all of these remedies require time, special skills, or money though. If you are looking for an affordable and universal treatment for stress, maybe you should give relaxation music a try. Relaxation music works because everything in the environment leaves an impact on our emotional, mental and physical state. In the same way that lively music gets your feet tapping, peaceful music can lull your muscles and your mind into soothing relaxation.

And, unlike spa treatments, exercise and doctors visits, it doesn’t cost very much time or money to listen to the right music. After all, once you have a CD player, an ipod, or a computer, you can listen to soft music while you putter around the house, drive in the car, or fall asleep in your bed. And, unlike a massage or a prescription that eventually run out, a CD can be played over and over again for as long as you need it.

A few skeptics believe that relaxation music seems too simple and easy to really be a viable solution, but its benefits have been scientifically tested and proved on several occasions. For example, doctors have been exploring its benefits for several years now and, in many studies, they have found that relaxation music accelerates healing and growth in their patients. It can also help people with insomnia or high levels of energy relax enough to fall asleep.

Relaxation music also has the ability to impact emotional moods. This means that the right kind of music can dispel melancholy and replace it with contentment and happiness. Consequently, relaxation music can be a wonderful tool for lonely or depressed individuals.

Any kind of soft, smooth, and peaceful music will probably be able to help consumers relax, but certain kinds are better suited for certain activities. That’s why there are companies who have developed unique products for every need in the market. This enables consumers to hone in on the service they need and save money.

ic therapy effective in the treatment of medical, physical, and emotional illness?

Scientific research, especially in northeastern Ohio, has indicated that music therapy can promote the healing spirit of an individual, can improve the quality of life of a patient, can induce hope and faith in overcoming illness. In these respects, music therapy plays its role in modern medicine. Indeed, healing music plays a pivotal role in a wide array of illnesses and disorders.

Pop singer Billy Joel once said: “Music in itself is healing.” But music therapy is not just about listening to music to feel good, nor is it just about music appreciation.

Music therapy is not a new concept using the healing spirit of music for therapeutic purposes. The ancient Greeks, Chinese, Egyptians, Indians, and Jews had successfully utilized the healing power of music in their cultures to promote health and wellness. In the 18th century, music therapy became a science for treating physical and psychological illness in the Western world.

So, what exactly is music therapy if it is not music appreciation or music relaxation?

Music therapy is planned interaction and intervention with specific goals based on the patient’s specific needs, strengths and weaknesses. Healing music is used in conjunction with physicians, physical occupational and speech therapists, nurses, and educators to achieve the desired healing effects of music. Essentially, music therapy is utilization of the healing spirit of music by trained medical professionals to motivate or change feelings and behavior patterns that may have substantial long-term health benefits for the patient.

The ultimate goal of music therapy is recovery and recuperation from an illness or disorder. Music healing is especially advantageous in this day and age, when many people are suffering from emotional and mental problems. Healing music can help one manage stress more efficiently and effectively in that it can facilitate one to express pent-up feelings of anger and resentment, which have adverse psychological effects on mental health and wellness. Music therapy is often used to enhance the impaired memory of patients as a result of neurological disorder. Healing music is also effective in improving communication skills of individuals who are socially withdrawn or who have personality problems they are incapable to deal with. Music therapy, through its healing spirit, can teach social skills. Physiologically, the healing power of music not only facilitates physical rehabilitation for stroke patients, but also alleviates physical pain.

It must be remembered that healing is more than just about the physical; the emotional and spiritual aspects should also be taken into consideration. Music therapy benefits the mind and the spirit. If it can foster hope and faith in overcoming a physical or emotional impediment, music therapy has served its function in modern medicine.

New Age Music

Music, they say, soothes the savage beast and this is so true when we consider how music in its magical way works on our body rhythms bring harmony, literally, back into the body.

A story is told in the Bible of a King named Saul, who had an evil spirit that would torment him and make him feel terrible. It was suggested that they find someone who could play he harp and then the evil spirit would leave and King Saul would feel better. So they searched and found a young shepherd boy named David and he was commissioned to play for Saul whenever the evil spirit came upon him.

Whenever the spirit from God came upon Saul, David would take his harp and play. Then relief would come to Saul; he would feel better, and the evil spirit would leave him. 1 Samuel 16:23(KJV)

Researchers have found that certain types of music are more uplifting to the soul than others. Although you may think that a way to relax would be to listen to your favorite rock band, you are sadly mistaken. This will only rev up your engines and make you more stressed than when you started out. No, the way to personal harmony must come from a very specific kind of music. Not all music relaxes, you must personally feel more relaxed, your breathing must become slower and deeper for music to have a relaxing effect on you.

According to composer and music researcher Stephen Halpern Ph.D., “Music is not all that meets the ear. If you were to have earplugs in your ears, you cold still ‘feel the music’” he explains. “That’s because music is vibrations. And these vibrations affect your heartbeat, blood flow, brain waves - your entire body chemistry.

So it is by our body responses that we can tell if music is truly relaxing us or not.

In order to truly enjoy the music it is best if you can get yourself focused on it by either sitting still or lying down and really soak it in.

I realize that there are times when you just can’t do this and just listening while going about your work is better than nothing, but it will not have the same effect as actually absorbing yourself in it.

I personally love to just run a hot bath with my favorite aroma, lavender. Then I light candles around the bathroom and turn off all of the lights. This is my special time when I can relax and toss away the cares of the day. In the living room, right next to the bathroom, I have beautiful classical or new age music playing softly. As it permeates the room, mixed with the scent of my bath and candles, I am in another world, totally relaxed without a care in the world.

Music, in my view, is the most influential and powerful therapy that you can provide yourself. It not only affects your soul, but your body and spirit as well.

There are nights when as much as we want to drift off to sleep, we can’t. It is said that slow and soft music can put individuals to sleep. Nothing tops the list better than New Age music.

When talking about New Age music, artists who normally come to mind are Enya, Loreena McKennit and Clannad. Aside from these three Irish talents, there are other New Age articles making music who deserve to get an insomniac’s attention, rather listening ears.

If you are one of the people having trouble sleeping, then you can resort to other kinds of music aside from New Age. Here are some suggestions.

1. Theta Meditation

Meditation can not only reduce a person’s stress, it can also increase his health and assist him in achieving a certain sense of balance and calmness. Recently conducted studies indicate that the states of meditation produce a vast amount of Theta brainwaves frequency.

These pulses are embedded in the music therefore activating the person’s brainwaves resulting to a rejuvenating and restful meditation. If you go to music stores, surprisingly they have CDS for Theta Meditation.

2. Ambient Music

These are mostly background sounds like the soft wailing of the night wind, the rustling of leaves, the rolling of the waves at the beach and more sounds from nature. These have been clinically proven to help people to fall asleep faster so they are refreshed when they wake up.

3. Speed Sleep

In Neuro Linguistic Programming, Frank Prince is the master practicioner. He is also a member of National Sleep Foundation. He’s the counselor and adviser of business leaders, students and professional athletes wanting to improve their sleeping habits. His recording “Speedsleep” is a collection of all his work.

4. Brain Wave Suite

By using inaudible pulses in sound behavior and brainwave patterns, this music is embedded with lush and ambient tunes, therefore triggering the pulses of the person’s brain to produce the state he desires.

5. Journeying to Dreams

You will be able to discover the world of free thoughts which flows along the rivers of illusion and imagination that are forged from the melodies of a score so intriguing that it hooks your ears.

This brings us to the usual question most people ask regarding the matter. What is the connection of this kind of music to an individual’s sleeping habit? Does it bore one to sleep?

The answer is no. However, the kinds of music enumerated earlier are so soothing that the individual will wake up feeling all refreshed, relaxed and rejuvenated. Above all, he is free of stress and worries. It really depends on the person what kind of music will help him rest.

For those who are internet savvy, this technique has also been utilized over the web. Nowadays, one can download a nap software. Just like the CDs and tapes you buy at the store, these programs have music that will help your mind relax.

The audio tracks primarily contain Neuro-Linguistic Programming and sound effects which help organize the elements needed to assist people in their sleeping habits. It is said that these trigger the nerves in our brains and therefore causing the person to feel more tired and ready to fall asleep anytime upon listening to music.

Sleep is important because the energy a person needs to face the day’s challenges depends on the amount of rest he was able to get the night before. If you find sleeping quite a problem then these music options will be the answer to your problems.

Notice that upon getting a good night’s sleep, you are more energetic and feel better as opposed to spending last night tossing and turning. You are not the only person who finds sleeping difficult. That is why music for the insomniac is quite popular in stores.

These audio CDs are musical and relaxing and are encoded with sonic energy that can easily reconnect your mind and body, discharging anxiety and stress. Upon choosing which music you will listen to, soon enough you will notice that your sleeping ability has improved.
