First let me say to the readers or students of streetcollege. The music business is a mutli- billion dollar industry. The fact of the matter is when most people think about the entertainment industry, they (the consumer-fans) assume every one (musicians & Artist) are making a tons of money. The artist you see on Tell-Lies-Visually (television) in music videos may have more money than you, at the time. That money is most likely from the advance money, from the record company.
This advance is a loan from the record company that is used to pay for studio time and other services needed to get your record (music) in retail outlets, and break your record. If the artist is smart, they should invest in recording equipment and tool that will aid them in advancing.
With the fame you see with major recording artist, maybe so. However you have to work for that money. You have to deal with all kinds of industry people, and not all people in this business are what you expect them to be. With that being said, always be nice, humble yourself, and learn to do away with ego. Some people in this business will not treat you like you want them to, then you have those that act nice, and may have other motives.
Musicians have to realize that we live in a new age, and in this new age, we now have the ability to broadcast content on a global, scale. The phonograph record (physical record) is becoming a thing of the past. Ringtone sales are increase at a rapid rate and CD sales are declining. And monetizing music is no longer a myth.
Advertising companies are coming up with ways to include short form advertisement in downloadable and streaming music. This give the artist the option to make revenue off their music just by letting advertising agencies place short audio ads on your download.
That is just one stream of income. Artist and musicians, please listen to this very carefully… You can make money from doing a lot of things, you have to remember it’s takes a lot of work to break a hit. This work includes, performing in venues in a region or on national level, publicity, in store promotions, promotions, etc. This all requires some time and money. To break a record takes a lot of time and effort. Even if your trying to get the attention of a major record label, it requires work. Those major recording artist earn that money. They work day in day out, traveling all over never having time for them self and more.
The many ways musicians generate income can come from Television commercial jingles, song writing, getting your music in a movie sound track or video game, etc. With the many movie production companies and videos games coming out there should be no excuse. So start your mission now.
